A Change of Plans...

Having Served as a Cub Master and in the Cub Scouts program for almost 20 years now, I'm one of those people who can appreciate that often you need more than just a plan to have a successful gathering. Almost ALWAYS more important than the Plan itself is the ability to adapt to random changes you don't anticipate. Keeping the Spirit of Cubscouts in mind, helps... Being inflexible or fixated on doing the Plan the way it was planned often leads to a spirit of contention and discontent, which drives away the Spirit. Ironically, it may have even been that same Spirit that helped you create that plan in the first place, but when that plan becomes more important than the people it was intended to serve... that's when things have the potential to backfire.

I love how in the Book of Mosiah (Chapter 1 and 2), in the Book of Mormon, King Benjamin makes a plan. Still, despite his best intentions and great wisdom, the plans don't quite work out the way the old king intended. He builds a tower to declare his message to his people.  His plan was pretty good, I'm sure, but then it turns out, there are more people attending the gathering than can hear his voice, so he  has scribes write down his words and then shout them to the gatherings nearby, so that they can be heard by all the multitudes.

Not only does he prepare physically, but he prepares the people spiritually by telling them to listen to his words and not "trifle" with them. (Mosiah Chapter 2 verse 9). He sets the mood. He explains why he's been a good king, what's made him a good leader, and then he delivers his message.

A good leader therefore has a vision, a duty, and a plan. He can also adapt his plans when things don't go according to that plan. Finally, a good leader anticipates the needs of his people and is upright, respecting the same words and laws he gives to his subordinates. King Benjamin was definitely such a leader.  (Some more verses about the kind of king Benjamin was)... So be flexible in the service of God and you might just turn out to be a decent leader too.
